Interview: Bronson Brown

MMA-SA InterviewsDate: 11/03/2007

MMA-SA: Bronson Brown, that name rings a bell! Even across the country and now it’s going to be in the ring. We hear you going to have your first mixed martial arts fight, tell me more about it?

Bronson Brown: I don’t know about my name been know across the country but, yes, I will be stepping into the ring on the 20th May 2007 date is still to be confirmed. I am very excited about the whole match up and keen to match my skills up with another trained opponent.

MMA-SA: Do you know who your opponent is?

Bronson Brown: As of now I know a little of my opponent but what I do know is that he is no stranger to the ring and has a few fights under his belt.

MMA-SA: Your background is power lifting and you won the world powerlifting championship title in 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now you plan to take on some of the countries top fighters, tell me about this?

Bronson Brown: I actually placed 3rd in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2000 and then won the world title in Cape Town in 2001. Yes I enjoyed my powerlifting career and got to travel to many places as a springbok powerlifter which was pretty cool, but it left me with a lot of injuries which affects my training in Brazillian jiu-jutsu. As for taking on some of South Africa's top fighters lets not jump the gun here, I haven’t even had my first fight yet, that’s all I need all those guys after my blood.

MMA-SA: You have a reputation for fighting on the street, how does this differ from fighting in the ring and how do you feel you will excel?

Bronson Brown: I have a reputation for fighting on the street I think in the line of work I was in, I was exposed to fighting and altications you should know, you were next to me a few times, haha…..Jokes aside, you cannot compare street to the ring I think what the street taught me is how to react when you get hit and what it feels like to get hit, but when I started training there were many fights and even still now I go home demoralised and bruised from been given a good beating in the training from a guy that may not necessarily beat me on the street. That’s why people need to respect each and every one of those MMA fighters that get into the ring, it takes a lot of dedication, blood, sweat and tears and a whole lot of heart to get in the ring and shut your mouth, step forward and put your gloves on takes guts.

MMA-SA: You train with Message BE here in Durban, how is that going and what has it taught you?

Bronson Brown: I train under Dr Mica Atkinson, a brazillian jui-jutsu purple belt who has been training B.J.J. for 10 yrs now but prior to that he was a springbok judo competitor. Jiu-jutsu is a amazing sport that I think everyone should learn especially woman, who, lets face it, in this country right now fall prey to rape, hi-jacking or even domestic violence. But the main thing for me is that I have got to meet a whole lot of great people that come from various walks of life that are able to learn B.J.J. And are actually very good at it to. So aggression does nothing for part of this training, its controlled education and gives you hell of a cardio vascular workout.

MMA-SA: Good luck and catch you on the night.

Bronson Brown: Thank you and see you on the night.
